What is Mums’ English Circle?

We are a group of mothers from around the world

We have online meetings Tuesday – Friday, via Zoom.  Chat about topics like our children, careers, women’s issues, food, festivals and more.

You can choose to attend five meetings a week or one, stay for 10 minutes or 40 minutes! You can chat with other mums around the world, ask them questions, and get to know each other. All the mums are very supportive so you’ll always enjoy the meetings.

What are lessons like?

Lessons are fun and relaxed! They are all about the conversations. You can stay for the whole lesson or come and go as you need to. We understand if you have young children that you might come and go sometimes. Lessons are 30-60 minutes long.
All lessons are on Zoom, so you can join on your mobile phone or desktop computer.

You can watch a clip from a lesson here

What time are lessons?

We have group lessons at these times

Tuesday 0900 (Italian time, with teacher Maria)

Wednesdays 1030 (Japan time)

Thursdays 1100 (Japan time)

Fridays 1600 (Japan time)

How much is it?

It’s $25 USD per month, or $250 USD a year.

Is this right for me?

If you are a mum who is about B1 intermediate level or higher in English this is for you

(that’s about TOEIC 400, Cambridge Preliminary (PET), BEC Preliminary, BULATS score 40-59, CLB/CELPIP 5, CAEL 50, IELTS level 4, TOEFL score 57-86. TOEFL iBT 42 or higher). Mums’ English Circle is right for you.

If you’re a mum who used to be this level but you haven’t studied for a long time, it’s still ok. Once you start exercising your English muscles they will quickly get back into shape.

If you’re a mum who is ready to spend some time studying English everyday (or most days) MEC is for you!

Do I have to be an English teacher to join?

No! A lot of our members are English teachers, or used to be, but any mother is welcome to join us.

I have another question!

If you have any other questions, or just want to say hello  email me at abbie@englishwithabigail.com

About Me

Hi! I’m Abbie. I’m British and I live in Japan with my husband and two daughters.

I’ve been teaching English for over 12 years, in the UK, Japan and online.

I know how hard it is to have time for language learning while you’re trying to raise a family, look after the house and work all at the same time!

That’s why I came up with the idea for Mums’ English Circle. This is a safe and friendly place where you can chat in English. English conversations for teachers are essential to keep your skill level up and confidence high.

If you’re an English teacher you might be feeling as if you should know all the English already, but that’s not true. MEC is a place to practice, to keep your English level up, and also make mistakes and ask questions in a safe and friendly place.

I hope to see you soon!

What members say

It’s my weekly mood booster!

Wirda

When I spoke English, I got a little nervous because I had no confidence. After joining MEC, I became to be able to speak English more naturally than before because all the participants are gentle ladies. Originally my vocabulary was poor, but I reviewed English in a dictionary after the lesson and learned many words and expressions.

Even if I speak wrong English, nobody minds and hears my story. I can participate in a lesson comfortably. I can also talk about the troubles with childcare with participants in MEC.

I recommend MEC to mothers who cannot go to English lessons because of childcare and who want to interact with overseas mothers, especially who have not spoken English for years and forgot English.

Kayo

I like talking with other women from all over the world and seeing that we have the same problems. There is a lot that connects us even though we live in totally different cultures. I would recommend MEC to mums of every age, who want to speak in English and learn it just through our talks, where we don’t think about mistakes. We focus on the content and we understand each other.

Malgosia

Poland

I can study with my children, even if they’re sometimes noisy 🙂

I hadn’t spoken English for ages before joining MEC. I was so nervous if there should be any mistakes which I may make at the beginning of MEC. Not only being encouraged by Abbie but also welcome from other members over the world, I overcome my nervousness and shyness and feel like talking more with lots of fun every meeting (Thus I have made myself at home). I as mum want to know more about other cultures and other friendly mums thoughts to expand my view. Can’t wait for the next one!

I get to know mums who are from other countries where I haven’t ever gone in my life.
I liked to travel whenever I had spare time to explore new places and meet new people with different backgrounds.  Now I am able to communicate with mums from the world through MEC. This means a lot to me.

I would recommend MEC to mums who are interested in other cultures or like to chat with mums from different countries. Especially, mums who are busy working or raising kids are most welcome. Don’t worry if you should miss the meeting or leave earlier than the meeting ends, there are meeting recordings available.
